blindness

tonight is the release of
Blindness, the film
based on this tremendous book by José Saramago

one of the last masterpieces of the 20th century

& i knew i wrote something about the book
a while ago
this mostly bitter, little sweet
old post from august 2006

really!
excited about the film
and very afraid too

so far, i've been reading
sort of bad reviews!
that's a little disappointing and strange
since Fernando Meirelles
is a great director

anyway, i will watch it

zweifellos
no doubt
indudablemente

Oh, bere, I saw the commercial of this movie two days ago and I was like, hm.... is it a movie from that book I learned from you. I was, to be honest, that they make film from this movie. I liked the book but I believe it is really hard to bring out their feelings to a movie. Don't you think so? I am afraid of watching this movie since the book was good. Usually movie from a good book doesn't do well. ... I finished reading a book written by Japanese female writer, Mariko Hayashi. The book was so interesting that I couldn't go to sleep to read the book. I am not sure if you like her books but it was good. After reading this book, I realized again how wonderful to read books. Thank you for teaching me joy of reading books. I think you know this Japanese used book store, Book off in the same shopping mall with Mitsuwa. They finally open in San Diego. There is one in OC as well. I bought Mariko Hayashi's book in Book off close to my father's house in Japan for a dollar. So I went there to buy more cheap Japanese used books this morning. But when I got there, all I saw was English books but I finally found Japanese ones. I bought 7 books. I think you will enjoy the store since they have English books as well, if you haven't been there yet. I like Book Off. I will e-mail you about Japanese writers I like. umnxakcs

oh lisa, yes, every day more i am afraid of watching Blindness, you are right, it is a very hard book, i think too, to bring to a movie, one thing i like of the book is that shows you for real the anxiety of not being able to see, and how to explain that on a movie, maybe i will wait for the DVD so i don't get too disappointed if it's too bad ;)

oh lisa, and i am really happy you are enjoying reading... and THANK YOU!! 'cause most of the very good books i have read and all the japanese authors i know it's thanks to you. and yes i think reading is so nice 'cause as you said with the book you were reading, you can get really into a neat story and learn and be excited about, reading and traveling to those places many books can take you is like living a double life and a truly way to relax from every day stress.

and how cool that you found books in japanese!! by now i am OK reading in english, but often i find words i don't understand and it's just a different flow than when i read in spanish, after all, it is more natural for me to read and write in spanish than in english... so i am very glad you are enjoying books in your languages dear lisa

and yes! i will totally check out that bookstore, i go to mitsuwa often for those 1.99 tea bags or lunch :)

will let you know when i read more japanese authors, i still have to read the last one you gave me, Kenzaburo Oe - Teaching us to outgrow our madness, the title sounds encouraging :) and one day i must read too the Tale of Genji, but must be brave for that one ;)

take care dear lisa & enjoy very much your books and i will wait for the titles :)

We watched the movie last week on the theatre; Gaby liked it with no further comment other than how terrible would that be... For me, it was a good movie, a bit in the same vein a Children on men or films like those which portrays mankind facing a global disaster; a bit too depressing and hopeless I may say, but the story is original and the photography is well done... Very realistic except for the fact that she's not contaminated -nobody knows why... I'm pretty sure the book is better...
Have you seen 10,000BC? We just saw it and found it very refreshing and exciting...

hola dear beto!
i am glad you watched the film! as encouraged as i sounded to watch it, well, i haven't, i still plan to watch it, so thanks for sharing your thoughts :) and yes! it's a strong story, that i think portrays the 'worst case' of many situations of that humanity has to face... and yes beto, it's a very depressing story, on the book too, but somehow, at least on the book there's a sense or taste of 'redemption' and i am not sure if the film shows that

and yes! if you are interested you might want to check out the book, 'cause one thing i am sure didn't translate was the writing style of Saramago, rather different, with a few punctuation signs and dialogs without dashes or sentences... very interesting

ah oh i haven't seen 10,000BC but muchas gracias for throwing the name and the exciting/refreshing, just what one needs :)

gracias y buenas nochesitas
