tonight i saw a possum at my newer home
for the very first time, there he went
crossing the patio, quiet, stealth
i remember the very first time i saw one
i was petrified
now, i like them...
it was a warm sign to see one tonight
of course i was alerted, not so quietly
by Herr Gato, meowing by the window
loud
'an old friend!?' he thought, 'perhaps...'
'good old possums,' he meowed!
'like those we met, ... back in Normal Heights'

Is possum the same as an opossum? I know that's an animal but no more. According to your answer I might be obliged to search the matter on the web.
It seems there are more and more wild animals that start to make a living in our cities. Thus in Berlin wild boars are a real plague because they cannot be hunted there and they know it.
Last month, coming back from a paragliding stint, my new car was hit by a boar. He or she came out of the forest at high speed. Maybe the new goverment will install driving lessons for them and above all, teach them the pedestrian speed limits. An urgent matter.

Possum's are seen here(NE) pretty often...like Georg says perhaps because we've encroached on their habitat : )

and YES possums are the same as opposums, and well, in San Diego, we have always had a BIG population of possums and skunks, squirrels too! But different from Berlin and the East Coast, I think San Diego is plagued by them 'cause of the geographical nature of the city, we live among canyons, so many parts of the city are canyons with trees, so possums and skunks live there and at nights they go out, sometimes during the day too!
that's too bad on your car Herr Georg and I hope you find that wild boar and pays you back ;)
I am glad to hear though, that wild boars are respected on Germany, Germans seem to be more gentle than Americans on killing wild life
