windy Diego

today the weather in San Diego was nothing
like its sunny self...
with wind gusts over 55 mph
(over 80 kilometers per hour...)
and raining the whole day
not too hard
but constant rain

i don't think i have ever seen
winds so strong in my life before
only maybe on TV

18 neighborhoods lost electricity
since last night, 250 car accidents happened
southern Californians have no idea
how to drive in the rain
and even less how NOT to...
flooding all over the place
and many trees have fallen
the streets are full of palm tree fallen leaves
and it's snowing in the closer mountains

my friends the sparrows
try to hide from the wind and rain
they ate for a little some wet seeds
and then they left again
i wonder were birds hide from strong wings

and a board from the back of my house fell off!
now i know how the 3 little pigs felt
when the big bad wolf said:
"Let me in, Let me in, little pig(s)
or I'll huff and I'll puff and I'll blow your house in!"

the three little pigs being
Frau Kitty, Herr Gato, and me...

and for a while in the morning Herr Gato escaped
and hid under the house, the rain felt harder
and he didn't dare to come back

after 4 or 5 hours, about 2pm
the rain became milder
so he came in, soaking wet
after some good towel dry,
a can of wet food, and some pets
he went back be his lazy self...

and even if i enjoy cloudy rainy days
specially since we get so little rain around here
the winds so strong were the ones
that made the situation very scary

Frau Kitty hides under a blanket, keeping warm

Haha. At least Herr Gato and Frau Kitty are looking warm and cozy now! :oD

Yep, that was some nasty cool rain, wasn't it? Being from the harsh Midwest I thought it was going to just be another one of those sprinkle that San Diegans like to mistakenly classify as 'rain'. Ewwww! Had to go out to grab cooking oil and a few other items at Vons and found out the hard way that there was a hole in one of my shoes. :o(

O well... Thanks goodness for hot cocoa! I can't get enough of the thing. Hope you are enjoying the little cool (but dry) break we're having! :o)

herr Thilolito, thanks for the cool words on the shots, and yeah! my bathroom wall felt, it was soooo cold to go to the bathroom during the night, the good news is that my landlord is rebuilding that part, and will include some isolation, so hopefully the little house won't come apart ;) and hey! yeah, i think Germany has better weather now, huh?
take care & thanks, hugs to you!

mister Smorg, hey! NO kidding, i felt like in one of those Weather channel documentaries on Monday... today and yesterday were beautiful though!! chilly, sunny and very clean city (except for the fallen trees and palm tree trash all over the place) but hey! at least we face this like every 10 years, huh? unlike your pals from the East Coast that live through these every season

and yes!! time to get new shoes, i like the Nordstrom Rack for that... and get more hot cocoa 'cause the rain is coming back tomorrow, but apparently it will be more of a typical SanDiegan rain, so i've heard, mild and warmish, we shall see... keep warm!

Hola Berenice,

Reading your very vivid description of the S.D.storm, I wonder if it it was really 80 km/h. Because destruction starts above 100 km/h.

Our female cat Mitsi is very much afraid of thunderstorm, the different noises. But she confuses now simple rain with the big deal: whenever it rains, she takes shelter on the first step to the cellar, behind the door, stays there for hours. Sometimes I pass and shove her back to life.

You are absolutely right, rain makes driving very dangerous. Probably because the rear mirrors don't work, the windows are steamed up, blurred.

In Paris, where it snows nearly never, some little centimeters of snow bring the traffic to a standstill. Everybody is scared shitless and drives like a frozen beginner.

As to the little birds, don't worry for them: they know how to cope. Mostly they hide in low bushes or in dense trees very near the trunk.
I hear them complaining frequently when the wind is howling around Cantal.

It seems your wooden house withstood. Good to hear and see that.

oh herr Georg too sad on Mitsi (cute name by the way) and yes many cats and dogs are afraid of storms, huh? i am glad you comfort her during those noisy rainy times

and YES Georg, it was that scary!! after all a board fell from my house and many palm trees and eucalyptus trees were pull from their roots! just a block from my house there's a palm tree still blocking the street, so sure there was destruction in San Diego, many power lines fell down too

here, check this post from the news, and take a look at the photos from the middle photo session captioned Storm Leaves Trail of Damage, there you can see photos of the aftermath of that day's storm...

and i'd looove to see Paris snowing, but surely not driving...

i was in Paris in '92 with my mom and i do remember thinking that Parisians drive a little like mexicans, careless, fast, and all over the place, now i can only imagine when it rains...

keep warm herr Georg, and keep Mitsi away from storms ;)

Bonjour Berenice,

Just one point regarding Paris. I lived there for 15 years. In the first days in the city my boss told me I would have to go to the Machine-Tools-Exhibition with the Company car and this made me wake up in the middle of the night, so much I was afraid.

Well, I survived. But let me tell you the Parisians are neither reckless nor careless drivers. But they are brutal and if there is an empty spot in the driving line exceeding 5 meters someone will needle himself in, right in front of you, at 1,5 m distance. These people drive with great precision and quite fast, but they know what they do.

I always said if you see a car with the number 75 (Paris city) driving slowly that means he/she is looking for a parking space.

herr Georg!
your description of Parisians' driving matches that one of Mexico City inhabitants too! people there drive very fast but very good too, funny how Americans drive slowly but not as accurate, except in New York City, where the hordes of Yellow Cabs drive ala Paris way too

i guess is a driving sickness of the Urban kind, huh?

hey! but life in the French country gladly is much more relaxed, huh? hope you are doing fine and not having nightmares of having to drive through Paris no more...
