Your saying "le faltaba un tornillo" exists in German as well "er hat eine Schraube locker" oder "bei ihm ist eine Schraube locker" (locker means not screwed tight.
As to your question about myself in France: well, I am married here, my wife is French. So I have specimen of the native population right near by. Sure, there is a difference between the French and the Germans, but those differences are small compared to the huge pile of habits that unites us.
I have been so many years in foreign countries (before France I lived in Belgium) that I feel a bit foreign everywhere, even in my home town Berlin.

I am very interested in your home-town Berlin, I hope my next time in Germany I can go there
and I understand you very well about feeling a bit foreign everywhere, I was born actually in San Diego, but since age 3 until age 31 I lived in Mexico City, but now I would feel alien there, and even though I consider San Diego my home-town now, after 7 years here, I still feel foreigner here, and when I go back to Autlan, in rural México, where I spent all my summers for about 20 years, I feel a little out of place too...
but I am sure that having a lovely french specimen as your wife of course makes you feel more French-willkommen!
and yes the differences among Europeans, I think are not as obvious and the 'trans-continental' ones...
